Your questions answered

Below you will find common questions people ask regarding hypnotherapy services.

It may surprise you to know that hypnosis is quite natural. It is a state of trance that we enter many times a day e.g. when we are driving a car, watching television, reading or whilst out for a run. It is a state of focused awareness rather than a sleep state. It is where the conscious mind and the subconscious mind can be aligned with the client’s goals.

By relaxing, thinking positively and focusing on your desired goals, hypnosis can help you to improve your unwanted habits, feelings and behaviours.

Hypnotherapy is a form of complementary therapy that utilizes the power of positive suggestion to bring about subconscious change to a person’s thoughts, emotions and behaviours. Hypnotherapy is completely safe and there are no harmful side effects. When using hypnosis to bypass the critical conscious part of ourselves, we are able to re-programme the unconscious and alter our internal thought processes for the better. When administered by a professionally trained hypnotherapist, the benefits are positive and long lasting.

Hypnosis feels different for everyone, but it is always pleasant. You will feel relaxed. Some people feel deeply relaxed whilst others feel a sense of lightness, floating, drifting, calmness, tingling or a heaviness of arms, legs or head. Some may have no recollection of the process afterwards and some may recall everything, and some will be in between those two. Hypnosis is a safe, relaxing and enjoyable experience.

Although it uses a similar state of relaxation, stage hypnosis is for entertainment only. The stage hypnotist’s trade is one of careful selection and the control of the subjects is largely illusory based on a small part of the subject’s motivation. The hypnotist relies upon the subject’s desire to entertain the audience once they are on stage.

Yes, during hypnosis you are fully in control. You are conscious but your conscious mind is extremely relaxed. You will be fully aware throughout and can end the session at any point should you wish to. Clients thoroughly enjoy the experience of deep relaxation. The suggestions that are made by the therapist whilst the client is in this pleasant state of relaxation are very beneficial for the achievement of their goals and desires. You cannot be hypnotised without your consent. Hypnosis isn’t magic it is simply a state of very deep relaxation. A hypnotherapist cannot make you do or say something against your wishes.

I am a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is positive and focuses on solutions for the future rather than analysing problems of the past. I will not use regression or analytical techniques and will not require you to dig up or go over past issues or traumas that may have caused you upset or distress. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is as brief as possible. It is a forward looking therapy that acknowledges the client has all the resources and expertise in the field of their own lives. Focusing on the solution does not mean we dwell on the problems.

All hypnotherapists must belong to a professional body and as such should be able to provide the client with proof of their memberships and training in addition to evidence of insurance and a current Disclosure and Barring Service certificate. Evidence of memberships should be clearly displayed on the hypnotherapist’s website; they should also have copies of proof to show clients upon request.

I am a member of The Complementary and National Healthcare Council which was set up to provide a point of reference for members of the public who are searching for a complementary therapist. I am also a member of the National Council for Hypnotherapy, The Association for Solution Focused Hypnotherapists and The Hypnotherapy Association, all of which are regulatory organisations.

I am fully supervised, insured and hold a current enhanced DBS Certificate.
